A traditional holiday town in the Bernese mountains
Interlaken is in the Bernese mountain region of Oberland in central Switzerland. Built on a narrow strip of the valley, between the lakes of Thun and Brienz, it sits on the banks of the river Aare. Dense forests, alpine meadows, and glaciers with endless hiking and ski trails populate its surrounding mountains.
An international holiday and congress venue, Interlaken is an ideal starting point for many excursions. More than 45 mountain trains, gondolas, cable cars, chairlifts, and ski lifts transport visitors through 200 kilometers of slopes and an extensive network of walking routes. Many boats sail on the lakes of Thun and Brienz, including a variety of historic steamboats.
